Areas we cover in Scotland

A hybrid heating system pairs an air source heat pump with your existing boiler. The heat pump runs for most of the year and the boiler steps in on the coldest days. We install through MCS-certified partners across central Scotland and beyond, covering towns from Glasgow and Edinburgh to Aberdeen and Perth.

Each area has its own housing stock, climate profile, and heating fuel mix. Sandstone tenements in Glasgow and Edinburgh need a different approach from cavity-wall new-town estates in Livingston and Cumbernauld. Rural properties in Perthshire and Aberdeenshire are often off the gas grid, heating with oil or LPG, where a hybrid system delivers the greatest running cost reduction. The pages below cover the local detail for each town we serve.

How housing type affects hybrid heating in Scotland

Scottish housing varies widely. Pre-1919 sandstone tenements in Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Paisley have solid walls with no cavity insulation, meaning wall insulation is limited to internal or external systems. Radiators in these flats are often sized for high boiler flow temperatures. A hybrid system works well here because the boiler can run radiators at higher temperatures on cold days while the heat pump handles milder weather.

Post-war new towns like East Kilbride, Livingston, and Cumbernauld have cavity-wall construction, often with retrofitted cavity insulation. These homes generally retain heat better, meaning the heat pump can operate more efficiently. Gardens and suburban layouts make outdoor unit placement straightforward.

In Aberdeen, granite walls provide high thermal mass. Rural properties around Aberdeen, Perth, and Stirling are frequently off the gas grid, heating with oil or LPG. For these homes, a hybrid system is particularly valuable because oil and LPG cost more per kWh than mains gas, so the heat pump delivers greater running cost reductions. The oil or LPG boiler remains as backup for the coldest days.

Coastal areas like Dundee and Dunfermline benefit from moderated winter temperatures, meaning the heat pump runs efficiently for more of the year. The bivalent point — the temperature at which the boiler takes over — is typically set between 0 and -3 degrees in central Scotland, and between -2 and -5 degrees in colder inland and northern areas.

Frequently asked questions

Which areas of Scotland do you cover?

We cover the central belt including Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling, Falkirk, Paisley, East Kilbride, Livingston, and Cumbernauld, plus Dundee, Aberdeen, Perth, and Dunfermline. The surveyor confirms coverage when you enquire.

Do you install hybrid heating in off-gas-grid homes?

Yes. Homes heated by oil or LPG are among the best candidates for a hybrid system because those fuels cost more per kWh than mains gas. The heat pump handles most of the annual load, cutting delivered fuel significantly.

Can you install a heat pump in a tenement flat?

Often yes, if there is a suitable location for the outdoor unit such as a rear court, balcony, or ground spot. The survey checks access, airflow, and proximity to neighbours. The boiler can run existing radiators at higher temperatures on cold days.

Do you cover rural properties outside the towns listed?

Yes. We cover surrounding villages and rural areas for each town listed. If your property is in Perthshire, the Trossachs, Fife, or rural Aberdeenshire, call us on 0141 230 0198 to confirm we can reach you.

Is finance available for hybrid heating installations?

Interest-free credit up to £30,000, subject to status. We can discuss options after the survey if you decide to proceed.
